How can I get involved?

One of our key priority is that we work effectively with local residents, businesses and community groups.

We are keen to increase involvement from those sections of the community who are affected by crime and disorder.

We recognise that there are some excellent ideas being generated by our communities about how to make Camden a safer place in which to live and work.

We acknowledge those who take the time to let us know what is not working and what has changed. This feedback, through consultation, public meetings, phone calls or emails is important as it lets us know where we need to improve services.

Please contact the community safety partnership if you have any queries.

There are several ways that you can get involved. These are listed below.

Safer Neighbourhoods Panels
Safer Neighbourhoods Teams are ward-based policing teams led by a community panel. Local residents and businesses are invited to join the panels and attend regular meetings to discuss the community safety issues that matter to them.

Camden Community and Police Consultative Group (CCPCG)
The Consultative Group is an independent forum, comprising of representatives of a wide range of community interests. Since it was formally constituted in 1987 the Group and its activities have grown substantially.

The Consultative Group exists to provide a means for local consultation between the police and the community on all matters relating to the policing of the London Borough of Camden.

In particular, the objectives of the group are to:

  • work towards establishing a good relationship with the police and the community and maintain mutual trust;
  • provide an arrangement for a joint involvement for preventing crime in the area;
  • maintain a peaceful community within the London Borough of Camden;
  • promote agreed solutions to local problems, both in the short term and in the longer term

The group also co-ordinates the police sector working groups across the borough.

CamdenTalks

Camden’s citizens panel, CamdenTalks, was launched in September 2004. We introduced the panel to give you the chance to have your say about public services and life in the borough. The panel was used during our consultations on the 2004 audit which led to the publication of our three year strategy.

Volunteering with the Police

There are several opportunities available for people who want to volunteer their time with the Police.

You could apply to be a Special Constable who work with and offer support to regular Metropolitan Police Officers, providing a vital link with the people of Camden. Afforded the same powers as regular officers and wearing a similar uniform, Specials are everyday people who are prepared to give up at least four hours of their spare time each week to do something positive for themselves and their community.

Or, you could join the the Met Volunteer Programme which gets local communities more closely involved with their policing, and so improving the service the police can offer.

Dog Watch

Camden dog owners can help to reduce crime in their area by joining a Dog Watch scheme. Visit the Dog Watch page for more information.

Camden Together

camdentogether.org.uk sets out a possible vision for the future of Camden and invites you to help shape that vision.

StreetSafe

Street Population Services (part of Camden Council’s Housing and Adult Social Care Directorate) launched ‘StreetSafe’ at the beginning of 2007. StreetSafe provides the local community and businesses with the opportunity to report incidents of street based activity that affect them or others in their neighbourhood. StreetSafe also encouages beggars, rough sleepers, sex workers and drug takers to lead more constructive, safer and responsible lives.

The project operates through a network of community volunteers who report incidents of street activity to a central project co-ordinator, who is based at the Crime Reduction Initiative (CRI) offices. The project co-ordinator liaises with the Safer Streets Team (SST), Camden’s outreach service, and provides two way feedback.

If you would like to volunteer to take part this project, to report a problem or get more information please contact the StreetSafe project co-ordinator

Street Surveys

The StreetSafe Co-ordinator is also the contact for the regular street surveys which are carried out in Camden Town and the West End. The surveys are designed to ink the work being done around the reduction of street activity and the perception the community have of street activity in their area.

The surveys take place twice on one day each month (at 1pm and 6pm) and extra volunteers from the local community (both residential and business) are needed. Volunteers join SST, Street Wardens, Police and Council representatives to walk a regular route which takes between an hour and an hour and a half. It is a good opportunity for all partners to share information.

Community representatives can commit to doing both surveys in their area each month or just one a year if that’s all they can manage.
