King's Cross, Bloomsbury and Camden Town all benefit from the presence of dedicated teams of council street wardens.
Street wardens:
- provide a reassuring presence
- care for your neighbourhood
- deter anti-social behaviour
- foster civic pride and help strengthen communities
- improve the street environment.
Their main duties include:
- daily patrols, which offer a visible, approachable presence on the street, parks and estates
- providing a reassuring presence for local people
- reporting suspicious behaviour to the police and other enforcement agencies
- contributing intelligence for Anti-Social Behaviour Orders
- empowering communities by acting as professional witnesses
- supporting vulnerable residents of all ages
- reporting problems within the street environment eg graffiti and abandoned vehicles
- developing community spirit.
Street wardens work closely with Camden’s communities to set up schemes to benefit local residents, visitors and workers in the area. Some examples include:
- installing flashcams to deter overt drug use
- residents surgeries to provide info and practical help, e.g., property marking
- visits to community groups, eg charities and youth centres
- cashpoint and pension day patrols to deter crime
- walking school bus, which takes youngsters to school safely and on time
- pedestrian skills training for children
- citizenship programmes
- youth activities, eg football, cycle workshops
- designing anti-crime schemes, eg privacy zones around cash machines.
Street wardens aim to improve the quality of life of all the community, by linking street environment issues with community safety and looking at ways of reducing anti-social behaviour. They provide an holistic approach to problem solving, dealing with immediate problems as well as working on prevention, trying to engage different communities and fostering a sense of civic pride.
Wardens take responsibility for everything they come across on the street, if they can’t deal with it directly they will find someone who can.
If you feel intimidated or upset by the anti-social behaviour of others, or if you have a recurring problem such as drug debris on your doorstep or repeated vandalism you should contact the street wardens. They will try to help with the immediate problem and look at ways to resolve the causes in the longer term.
